Hiking Syncline Mountain and Tatie Peak | Washington

Tatie Peak and Syncline Mountain rise as prominent, adjacent summits near Harts Pass in the North Cascades, just a few miles from the Canadian border. Harts Pass—the highest point in Washington State accessible by car—makes an excellent base for exploring this remote corner of the range. Syncline Mountain takes its name from the folded rock layers visible in its cliffs: Cretaceous sandstone and shale compressed by ancient tectonic forces and later sculpted by Pleistocene glaciation. We pitched our tent just below the summit of Tatie Peak, then climbed Syncline Mountain at first light the following morning.
