Nico’s Week 3 Board & Train | Drop It Training for Resource Guarding

Nico is starting his third week of Board & Train at Best Paw Forward Dog Training! One of Nico’s main training goals during his program is working through resource guarding, particularly around higher-value items like bones. For today’s video, we introduced “drop it” work with toys and a lower-value bone. Since this is the first video where we are specifically focusing on this part of Nico’s training, we intentionally started with lower-value items rather than immediately challenging him with something he feels strongly about. When working with resource guarding, we want to build Nico’s understanding and confidence gradually. Starting at a level where he can be successful allows us to teach him that giving something up does not need to become a conflict. As his skills improve, we can gradually work toward more valuable items while continuing to prioritize safety and Nico’s comfort level. This foundation will help us work toward Nico being able to disengage from and willingly give up items without feeling the need to guard them.
