Malaysia now produces about 3x more per person than the Philippines, but in 1960 the gap was just 13%. Here's how a small gap became a huge one, including the part neither country's story explains on its own. We draw one chart from 1960 to today. It shows why the Philippines' "head start" was an exchange-rate illusion, how Penang's 1972 free trade zone changed Malaysia, and how a debt crisis in October 1983 cost the Philippines 22 years. We also cover Malaysia's own crashes, the outside shocks, and where both countries stand in 2026.
