EA Sports NHL '96 - All-star Season 1 Whalers Game 58 | The Whalers Harpoon the Panthers in FLA

The Whalers were still in Florida for Game 58 but this time they were playing the Panthers. This is the third meeting of these teams this year with Hartford having won both games so far out-scoring the Panthers 10-1 in total. The Whalers bought the pressure in the 1st period and scored just two minutes into the game. Hartford was short-handed when Geoff Sanderson chased down a long clear by Sean Burke that John Vanbiesbrouck gave up a big, fat, juicy rebound on. Sanderson picked it up and tried to shoot but Vanbiesbrouck took it away but then lost the puck into the net. Seven minutes later and the pressure paid off again. Geoff Sanderson scored short-handed again when Brad McCrimmon fed him for a blind backhander right along the ice tight to the post from the edge of the circle at the hashes. The period ended with Hartford up 2-0 and the shots at HTF 21 and FLA 7. The 2nd period as a stalemate with Florida only getting doubled in shot count rather than tripled like the 1st period. Neither team could solve the other's goalie so it stayed at 2-0 for Hartford. Shots at the 2nd intermission were HTF 41 and FLA 17. The 3rd period saw Hartford hold Florida to 6 shots and score another goal. Late in the period Geoff Sanderson finished off his natural hat-trick when Andrew Cassels spotted him sneaking in the from the other side and fed him right at the side of the net with a pass through the crease that Sanderson tapped in blocker-side with no chance for John Vanbiesbrouck on the play. Hartford won with strong checking and lots of time in the attacking zone. Despite good goaltending by John Vanbiesbrouck (stopping 50 of 53 shots) the Panthers' lack of scoring against Sean Burke's 23-save shut-out let them down. Enjoy!
