Located in Higashikawa-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido, Tenninkyo is an approximately 8-kilometer-long gorge spreading across the southwestern foothills of Daisetsuzan National Park along the upper reaches of the Chubetsu River. The "Shichifuki-iwa" (Seven Gods Rock), which symbolizes the gorge's scenic beauty, is a group of column-jointed rock peaks of high academic value, formed by massive volcanic activity of the earth and long years of erosion by the Chubetsu River. During the autumn foliage season, the red and yellow colors of maples and mountain ashes stand out against the grayish-brown rock surfaces and evergreen trees, presenting a magnificent color contrast woven by the volcanic topography and rich vegetation.
