08 Oblivion, the New Forest Caminito Community Tango Orchestra & Friends, Southampton 2026

LIVE TANGO MUSIC! At the invitation of the Music in The City Festival 2026 in Southampton, on Saturday 12th September in The Vault, members of the New Forest Caminito Community Tango Orchestra were joined by musicians from The London Caminito Community Tango Orchestra and others under the musical direction of Simon Cook to contribute a lively programme of tango music. Oblivion was composed 1982 by Astor Piazzolla. There are lyrics by David McNeil, the son of Marc Chagall, but this is an instrumental version. Arguably Piazzolla radically altered what tango music was, and could do so because he was deeply schooled in the very conventions he challenged. Here for example, he takes a milonga format – notoriously upbeat and jolly – which he has slowed and refashioned to a melancholy reflective pace. The title is indicative of the music’s sombre subject matter.
