Why can a faint aurora look much brighter and more colourful in your phone photo? Follow the same sky through your eyes, a camera sensor and night-mode processing to see where the colour comes from—and what a longer capture can lose.
We explain dim-light vision, how cameras gather and combine light, why the upper atmosphere glows, and why brighter is not always better. Bright auroras can show vivid colours to your eyes too.
The opening illustrates a faint display using two edits of one archive photograph. It is not a recording or calibrated simulation of human eyesight. Brighter auroras can be visibly colourful without a camera. The phone is an explanatory composite, not a test of that model. Photon, noise and motion demonstrations are illustrative. Any source time-lapse is identified as time-lapse. This is an evergreen explanation, not tonight's aurora forecast.
If you've seen an aurora, what differed most between your photo and your own view: colour, brightness, or movement? Did you use night mode?
