This season I realized I've been inspired by contrast—bold colors paired together, dramatic foliage beside delicate flowers, and unexpected combinations that somehow make each other shine. They're the kinds of containers that simply make me feel good every time I walk outside.
These two tall containers have become one of my favorite creations this summer. My goal was to create something lush, joyful, and full of movement—a design that evolves beautifully throughout the season here in my Zone 4 garden.
🌿 Plant Combination
Island Jungle® Colocasia (Proven Winners®)
Bandolista® Cocolito™ Lantana
Lemon Coral® Sedum (Proven Winners®)
Sweet Caroline Bewitched® Ipomoea( Proven. Winners)
Supertunia® Royal Velvet® (Proven Winners®)
AromaMagica® Purple Heliotrope( Proven Winner)
Surefire® Rose Begonia(Proven Winners)
Cascadias® Indian Summer Petunia
One of my favorite parts of designing containers is thinking about how every plant contributes to the overall feeling. The bold elephant ears create height and drama. Deep purple flowers add richness and depth, while coral, orange, and rose blooms bring warmth and energy. The bright chartreuse Lemon Coral sedum lights up the entire container, while the dark foliage of Sweet Caroline Bewitched creates the contrast that makes every color stand out.
These containers also hold a special story.
Years ago, while working for a landscaping company, we cared for a wonderful client's garden. She loved plants and gardening and always appreciated the care, attention to detail, and passion we brought to her landscape. When she decided to replace these planters, they were still in beautiful condition, and she generously passed them along to us.
Every time I plant them, I'm reminded of her kindness and of how gardening has a beautiful way of connecting people. I'm grateful these containers now have a new life in our own garden.
This video also includes a seasonal update. The containers were originally planted on June 13, and near the end of the video you'll see how they looked on July 25 after about six weeks of growth. Watching containers mature is one of my favorite parts of the gardening season.
🌿 FREE GIFT
If you'd like to keep track of your own container combinations, I've created a free Summer Container Memory Journal.
It's designed to help you record the plants you use, your favorite combinations, what performed well, and ideas you want to remember for next season. Over time, it becomes your own personal reference for creating even more beautiful containers.
You can download it using the link below.
