In the summer of 2026, four new miter gates were installed at Lock and Dam 9 near Lynxville, Wisconsin, replacing gates that had served since the 1930s. I was drawn to the precision behind that work: every measurement read back, every lift checked, every hinge asked to carry the river's weight. I kept the Mississippi as working water in "Four Gates at Lynxville." The crew clears its tools, signs the sheet and watches the first tow enter the lock. Then they eat breakfast from paper plates while the river keeps moving below them. That felt like the right place to end The First Water Through.
