Sophie R.'s friend was in a car on the way home when the Snapchat came in. It showed Sophie's nose bleeding, not long after Sophie left a prom night party with Cooper Ouellette.
This is the Life360 Trial, the State of Connecticut's manslaughter case against Cooper Ouellette in the May 20, 2023 death of 17-year-old Sophie R. Prosecutors allege Ouellette's conduct that night, with Sophie in his truck, caused her death, and that he gave alcohol to a minor. He is presumed innocent, and the State has to prove every element beyond a reasonable doubt, much of it with Life360 phone data the defense calls unreliable.
The witness on the stand is Morgan Pease, Sophie's friend. She went to prom that night with her boyfriend, and Sophie invited them to the after-party at the Schultz Corporation shop. She testified people were drinking there, and that she saw Cooper drinking too.
Then the prosecutor takes her to later in the night. Cooper came up to Sophie. When the prosecutor asked whether the two went into another room and argued, the defense objected that the question was leading, and the judge sustained that part. So listen to what she actually says after that: she did not hear Cooper's words, but she says yes, his voice was elevated. Shortly after, Sophie and Cooper left together.
She left about ten minutes later. She says she never saw an injury to Sophie's face at the party. No nosebleed. Then, in the car, the Snapchat arrived: a photo of Sophie's nose bleeding, around 11:40 she thinks. The jury sees it as a State exhibit. She asked Sophie if she was okay. Sophie never answered. The next morning came the missed calls from friends. Later that day, she says, a group of them went to Cooper's house, and Cooper's mom told them not to ask any questions.
Here is where I land on it, and I am not the jury. This testimony puts a window on the clock: Sophie with no injury at the party, Sophie hurt not long after leaving with Cooper. What it does not do is say how her nose started bleeding, and nobody in this clip saw it happen. That matters, because the State is building its case on a timeline, and the jurors will decide whether this photo fits the State's version of that drive or leaves a question the State still has to answer.

State of Connecticut v. Cooper Ouellette. Connecticut Superior Court in New Britain, Judge Chris Pelosi presiding. Ouellette, of Harwinton, is charged with first-degree manslaughter and delivery of alcohol to a minor in the May 20, 2023 death of Sophie R., 17, of Burlington, after a party in Terryville. Prosecutors allege she fell from or was struck by his pickup truck; the judge has ruled that Life360 phone location data may be shown to the jury, and the defense disputes its reliability. Ouellette has pleaded not guilty. Evidence is set to begin October 29, 2026. He is presumed innocent unless and until the State proves each charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
