At 12:36 AM, Cooper Ouellette texted "Is Sophie okay?" The Life360 Trial jury just heard the answer that came back.
This is Day 3 of the Life360 Trial in New Britain, Connecticut. Cooper Ouellette is charged with first-degree manslaughter and delivery of alcohol to a minor in the May 20, 2023 death of 17-year-old Sophie R. He told police she jumped out of his truck. The State is building its case on phone data, and the defense says that data cannot be trusted. That fight runs through every witness in this case.
On the stand here is a forensic science examiner from the State's lab in Meriden. She pulled the data off Cooper's own phone and built a separate report for each contact he texted that night. State's Exhibit 78 is one of them: two pages, three text messages, between the phone's owner, listed as Cooper, and a contact saved as "Mama Lynn." Sophie's mother, Lynn, was the first witness of this trial.
The first text is his, recorded at 12:36 AM on May 21: "If you have any questions, please text me or call me. Is Sophie okay?"
Then the reply, sent at 12:41 AM. The examiner reads it to the jury word for word, and I am not going to spoil it here. Hear it the way the jury heard it. Then listen to what the report shows next, and to the time the phone recorded that reply as read.
One minute later, Mama Lynn texts again: "Are you home safely?"
I have watched a lot of phone evidence go in front of juries. Most of it is numbers. This is not numbers. These are three messages between a 17-year-old's mother and the man who was driving the truck, that same night, and the jury got every word of them.
Here is what I want you to keep in your head while you watch. A report that shows no reply is a report about one thread on one phone. The same examiner also pulled Cooper's call history for that night, State's Exhibit 77, and that log runs both ways. Whether he reached out another way is a question the record can answer, and nobody asks it in this stretch of testimony. And there is a bigger one: if the defense says this phone's data cannot be trusted, it has to square that with a report that times every message to the minute. If the State relies on it here, it owns all of it.
We are not the jury. Only the jurors decide what these texts mean. But you should see exactly what they saw.

State of Connecticut v. Cooper Ouellette. Connecticut Superior Court in New Britain, Judge Chris Pelosi presiding. Ouellette, of Harwinton, is charged with first-degree manslaughter and delivery of alcohol to a minor in the May 20, 2023 death of Sophie R., 17, of Burlington, after a party in Terryville. Prosecutors allege she fell from or was struck by his pickup truck; the judge has ruled that Life360 phone location data may be shown to the jury, and the defense disputes its reliability. Ouellette has pleaded not guilty. Evidence is set to begin October 29, 2026. He is presumed innocent unless and until the State proves each charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
