The longest Old Testament quotation in all of Matthew - and he hangs every word of it on Jesus: the chosen, Spirit-filled Servant who brings justice to the nations, yet will not break a bruised reed or snuff out a smoldering wick. Isaiah sang it seven hundred years before the manger. Here is how you see it clearly - walk the square.
In this Walk the Square, Professor Westminster takes a single Old Testament promise - Isaiah's first Servant Song - and walks all four corners of Edmund Clowney's square: start with the text in its own world (bottom-left), up the left to the truth it announced to Israel, that the LORD would send His gentle, Spirit-anointed Servant to carry God's justice to the ends of the earth without crushing the weak (top-left), across the top to its fulfillment in Christ - the Jesus who withdrew from the plotting Pharisees and quietly healed the crowds (top-right) - and down the right to what it means for you (bottom-right). This is direct prophecy, not typology - so there is no diagonal to draw. There is a promise, spoken centuries ahead and kept to the letter. And notice where the application lands - not 'be as gentle as He was,' but: the Servant who will not break a bruised reed has not changed, so come to Him bent and barely burning, and with the nations put your hope in His name.

THE THREAD
Here the thread is a quotation, not a faint echo - the longest Old Testament quotation in Matthew's whole Gospel, the First Servant Song set down almost entire. Running through it is one word sounded again and again over this Servant: the Hebrew mishpat, justice, God's right order, carried across as the Greek krisis - 'proclaim justice... lead justice to victory.' And beneath it runs the Servant-word itself, Isaiah's 'ebed becoming Matthew's pais. Matthew turns only one line: where Isaiah wrote 'In His law the islands will put their hope,' Matthew writes 'In His name the nations will put their hope' - the coastlands become the Gentiles, and the hope fastens onto a name.
The method here is Edmund Clowney's, refined by Vern Poythress.
