Johann Sebastian Bach (1685–1750) — Jesus bleibet meine Freude, BWV 147
Performed by Vladimir Magalashvili in his own organ transcription.
Jesus bleibet meine Freude, known in English as Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, is the final chorale from Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben, BWV 147.
This recording was made on the Anton Feith Sr. organ of 1925 (III/P · 52 stops) at St. Marien, Berlin-Wilmersdorf — an unusual Generalschwellwerk organ. With the exception of a small number of pipes in the third manual, virtually the entire instrument, including the pedal and manual divisions, is enclosed within two swell boxes.
For this recording, the swell shutters are kept almost completely closed. On the third manual, an 8′–4′–2′ registration with tremulant creates a particularly distinctive colour — at moments almost reminiscent of the sound of a theatre organ (Wurlitzer).
Recorded at St. Marien, Berlin-Wilmersdorf, 2025 by Knut Becker.
