The first frost reached Reedglass Inlet before the rest of Silvermere.
The traveler arrived in the early evening while thin mist was gathering over the lake. Along the sheltered water, reeds stood motionless beneath a pale coating of ice.
The traveler had come searching for a small jetty shown on an old road sketch. There was supposed to be a path through the reeds, but frost had changed the shoreline. Every opening looked alike, and the mist made distance difficult to judge.
Then a bell sounded. One quiet note travelled across the water.
The traveler turned toward it. Nothing moved.
A second note came several minutes later, this time from farther north. Remembering Bellwater Shore, the traveler listened for the loose wooden strike of an old mooring ring.
This sound was clearer. Metal.
The traveler followed the shoreline instead of entering the reeds. Frost cracked softly beneath each step. As the light faded, the reeds changed from gold to grey, their frozen tips catching the last colour in the sky.
Eventually the traveler reached a narrow opening. Beyond it was the missing jetty.
A small bronze bell hung from its final post. Wind passing through the inlet moved it only occasionally, which explained the long spaces between each note.
Beside the bell lay a shallow wooden boat drawn onto land for winter. The traveler had expected to find someone waiting there. No one was.
A bundle of reed mats had been left beneath the shelter, still dry. The traveler used them to sit above the frozen ground while eating the evening meal.
As darkness came, the lake disappeared completely into mist. The bell sounded once more. From the jetty, its note did not seem mysterious at all.
Yet farther across Silvermere, another faint tone answered. Perhaps it came from Bellwater. Perhaps from another landing hidden beyond the fog.
The traveler did not follow it. Some questions were better carried forward than solved in darkness.
At dawn, frost would make the shoreline easier to read. For the night, the traveler remained beside the small bell at Reedglass, listening to Silvermere speak from one unseen shore to another.
Three hours of Celtic fantasy music and misty loch ambience for reading, study, sleep and relaxation, inspired by low whistle, first frost and the quiet waters of Awenreach.
