Paul Selig Gives Tami Simon a Live Reading, and Then the Guides Turn on Him

Tami Simon asks Paul Selig whether there are phrases he holds onto, a lifeline he repeats when he needs one. His answer is unusually plain. He has no magic words. What he does have is a permission he gives himself daily: I am allowed to trust this process, I am allowed to be in this process, and I am also allowed to not understand it while it is happening. Permission, as he puts it, to be as he is without the judgment he would otherwise employ. He is candid too about his own scepticism, which he says he has maintained since the beginning. His difficulty was never the energy, which he trusted, but the fact that it was coming through him. He quotes Helen Schucman, who scribed A Course in Miracles, saying she did not believe it but knew it was true, and he recognises that exactly. He also notes what makes it hard to dismiss: he does not think he is capable of closing his eyes and delivering thirteen books in front of an audience, without editing. He shares the attunement the guides gave most recently, three simple claims that they say hold all the other teachings within them, spoken from the level of the divine self rather than the ordinary one. When a room of a hundred people makes those claims together, he says, you feel the whole field escalate beyond any individual. Then Tami goes, in her words, straight to the heart of the matter. Both of them are in their sixties. She has much to be grateful for, and she loves the porousness she feels to this material. And still there is a part of her that has not come along for the ride, that is holding out, and she is impatient and a little frustrated about it. She asks what he or the guides would say to people like her, because she does not think it is only her. Paul says he is there with her in some ways, and then asks for her name as a coordinate and tunes in. What comes through is a question she has been carrying without naming it: if I do this, what am I giving up? Underneath it, he hears, is mistrust, and underneath that a fear of betrayal, because she has been hurt before. There is great sadness in it, and also real resolve. And then the reframe: what if there was no cost for this? What if nothing is being asked of you except what you can give? What if the part of you that already knows is beginning to comfort the part that is frightened? What follows is the most disarming turn in the conversation. The guides point at Paul, and he concedes it without hesitation: he still has a stake in the idea that being visible and trusting will get him harmed. They tell him that is accurate. You will both work through it in your own ways, he hears, and you have the right to it. Nobody is telling you no but you.
