The Black Forest | Ambient Documentary

Journey deep into Germany's Black Forest — the Schwarzwald — through one complete night and day, travelling through dark woodland, mountain streams, mist-covered lakes, traditional villages and landscapes shaped by hundreds of millions of years of change. We enter the forest in late afternoon and follow water beneath spruce, fir and beech. As darkness arrives, wild boar, deer, bats and owls reveal another side of the woodland while fungi and countless smaller organisms quietly recycle the forest around them. During the night, we travel much further into the past to discover how ancient mountain-building, the Upper Rhine Graben and Ice Age glaciers helped create the landscape beneath today's trees. We then follow streams toward one of Europe's great drainage divides, where water can begin journeys toward either the Rhine and North Sea or the Danube and Black Sea. Along the way, we explore the people who shaped the Schwarzwald through forestry, farming, mining, water power and clockmaking — and separate the real history of the region from its famous association with fairy tales. With sunrise, we climb toward the high Black Forest before returning through changing woodland and discovering how forestry, biodiversity and a warming climate are shaping its future. Finally, late afternoon brings us back to the stream where our journey began.
