HSK 5 Chinese Listening Comprehensible Input/The Virgin Complex in China

This is not a topic many people talk about, and it’s not even something most people are aware of. In China, it’s still largely unrecognized as an issue. After living half of my life abroad, I’ve thought about it a lot, and it feels somewhat backward to me now. I still remember that, because of the lack of proper sex education, I thought I had caught a terminal illness when I had my first period. My mother never talked to me about it. I remember being told that kissing could make you pregnant when I went on a date as a teenager. And I remember my bestie discussing with me about a surgery to “restore virginity” when we were 18. I was shocked that such a thing existed, and even more shocked that she felt there was a need for it. Now, twenty years later, what I hear and read makes me think that many teenagers are still going through the same confusion I experienced.
