In Welkom, Sibanye-Stillwater is pioneering a circular economy through the Eco-Transformers project. Once a dumping ground, this site has been repurposed into a thriving recycling and composting hub. With the support of Thrive, community members have been trained in waste management and compost production, turning organic waste into nutrient-rich soil amendments used to regenerate disused mining land. This initiative not only rehabilitates the land but also supports local food production, with herb and vegetable gardens demonstrating the tangible benefits of sustainable agriculture. Eco-Transformers, now a cooperative of 15 shareholders, is leading the charge in changing perceptions around waste—seeing it as an asset rather than a burden. By integrating kraal manure, carbon-based materials and food waste, the team has developed a fully organic, artisanal compost product sold to retailers in bulk.
