The sky shifts continuously, towering clouds catching the sun as blue breaks through between them. The air is calm and warm, carrying the scent of dry reeds and river water. Along the riverside, mixed woodland of alder, willow and oak lines the bank, their leaves moving gently in the light breeze. Herons stand motionless at the water's edge, while marsh harriers and barn owls patrol the open marshland. The river itself is rich with life — roach, bream, perch, pike and tench all thrive in these waters. In the reedbeds and dykes, dragonflies including the rare Norfolk hawker hover over the surface, while water voles move quietly through the bankside vegetation. A kingfisher flashes low across the water, and the call of a Cetti's warbler rings out from the scrub. The walk follows the riverside paths and marshland tracks near Lowestoft. No talking.
