One Dot Only — Law of Demeter as 60s girl group | The Principles (A2)

Law of Demeter, sung as 60s girl group. Side A, track 2 of The Principles: eight software principles, each recorded twice, A-side and B-side in opposite moods. Liner notes (animated diagram + code for every principle): https://claude.ai/artifact/ToeRLw8vTo... Listen to the album: https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/the... The rule: Talk to your friends, not to their friends. Don't reach through one object into another. Where it stops being simple: If dots are the problem, why is items.filter().map() fine? The answer is in the liner notes. Flip it over: B2 · The Wizard of Demeter LYRICS (Shoo-be-doo, one dot, one dot only) Mama sat me down when I was just a little class Said "Honey, you can call your friends, but never call their friends' friends past" I had a reference to a wallet, in a pocket, in a coat But Mama said "You ask the paperboy, and let HIM pay the note" (Don't you reach) through his jacket (Don't you dig) in his purse Don't talk to strangers, baby Only talk to your friends a.getB().getC().getD() That's where the trouble begins One dot, one dot, one dot only That's how the story ends Bobby chained six getters just to find out where I live Now every time my Address changes, Bobby's code won't give Girls, if he can't ask you nicely, if he's reaching through your mother He's coupled to your whole family tree, and he'll break with any other (Tell, don't ask!) Tell me what you want, don't ask me what I've got (Tell, don't ask!) I'll do it for you, darling, whether it's simple or not Now Sally chains her calls all day, and Mama doesn't mind 'Cause stream, then filter, then map: it's the same friend every time It's not the dots that break your heart, it's whose pockets that you're in When you dig through other people's things, that's where the trouble begins Don't talk to strangers, baby Only talk to your friends One dot, one dot, one dot only That's how the story ends (Shoo-be-doo...
