The Mist (2007) reaction and first-time watching commentary from The Film Perspective. MRLBOYD watches a group of frightened strangers become trapped inside a supermarket while deadly creatures—and an increasingly dangerous religious movement—emerge from a mysterious mist. Written and directed by Frank Darabont and based on Stephen King’s novella, The Mist stars Thomas Jane, Marcia Gay Harden, Laurie Holden, Andre Braugher, Toby Jones, William Sadler, Jeffrey DeMunn, and Nathan Gamble. After a violent storm damages his home, David Drayton takes his young son Billy into town for supplies. A dense mist suddenly surrounds the supermarket, concealing creatures that attack anyone who ventures outside. As fear spreads, Mrs. Carmody convinces a growing group of survivors that the disaster is divine punishment requiring human sacrifice. This movie reaction covers the military activity near David’s home, the mist engulfing the town, Dan entering the store covered in blood, the loading-dock tentacle attack, the survivors refusing to believe what is outside, Mrs. Carmody predicting divine judgment, the creatures attacking through the broken windows, the expedition to the pharmacy, the spiders and their victims, the soldier revealing Project Arrowhead, Mrs. Carmody demanding Billy’s sacrifice, Ollie finally stopping her, David’s group escaping the supermarket, the enormous creature walking through the mist, the vehicle running out of fuel, David discovering that only four bullets remain, his devastating decision, the mist clearing seconds later, the military arriving, and David realizing that rescue had been impossibly close. Was David’s final decision understandable based on everything he had witnessed—or should he have waited regardless of how hopeless the situation appeared? Who was more dangerous inside the supermarket: the creatures or Mrs. Carmody? Let me know in the comments.
