How Did Humans Start Eating Meat?

You've heard the saying, you are what you eat. But for millions of years, our ancestors mostly ate fruit, leaves and roots, so by that logic they were basically a salad. This video isn't picking a side on what anyone eats today. It asks an older question: how did a plant-eating ape pick up a sharp rock and start cutting into animals? You Will Learn in This Video: Chimps Eat Meat Too: How Jane Goodall's 1960 sighting of David Greybeard eating a baby bushpig ended the idea of vegetarian chimps, even though meat is still only about a small handful a day for an adult male. Ancestors Who Ate Like Plant Eaters: How nitrogen locked in tooth enamel showed that seven Australopithecus individuals from Sterkfontein cave, about 3.5 million years old, looked like plant eaters, not like the hyenas and big cats in the same cave. The First Butchered Bones: Why the cut marks at Dikika, older than 3.39 million years, are still argued over, and how Gona and Nyayanga give firmer evidence of stone tools, butchered hippo bones and bones crushed for marrow from about 2.6 million years ago. Scavengers or Hunters: Why fat-rich marrow and brains left behind by lions and hyenas may have been the first prize, and how small antelopes at Kanjera South suggest our ancestors were also hunting about two million years ago. Did Meat Make Us Human?: How the expensive tissue idea was tested and challenged, and what our chewing, our stomach acid, long-distance running and Neanderthal teeth can and can't tell us.
