A good used truck name is only half the decision. The same badge can hide a different engine, a different transmission, and a very different ownership cost. In this video I rank five used pickups for ordinary owners: the 2004–2011 Ford Ranger 2.3, the 2009–2010 F-150 4.6 two-valve, the 2003–2006 Silverado 1500 with the 4.8 or 5.3, the 2014–2021 Tundra 5.7, and the 2013–2019 Nissan Frontier 4.0. For each one: which years and engines to look for, which version I'd skip, and what to check before you pay. If I were buying, I'd start with the job the truck has to do, then verify the engine from the VIN and get an independent inspection. A recommended model is a place to start looking, not a reason to skip the inspection. The badge tells you the name. The engine and the inspection tell you the truck. 0:00 The badge was right, the version was wrong 1:27 #5 Ford Ranger 4:19 #4 Ford F-150 7:22 #3 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 10:45 #2 Toyota Tundra 13:57 #1 Nissan Frontier 17:28 How I'd turn this list into a purchase What year, engine and mileage is your truck, and what repair would you warn the next buyer about?
