What does it look like to live a life that consistently points away from yourself and toward something far greater? In John chapter 1, we encounter one of the most striking examples of selfless witness in all of Scripture: John the Baptist. At the very peak of his ministry, when crowds were gathering, when religious authorities were demanding answers, and when his influence was at its height, John refused every opportunity to claim greatness for himself. When pressed by a delegation of priests and Levites sent from Jerusalem, he did not seize the moment for personal gain. Instead, he simply said he was a voice -- nothing more, nothing less -- crying out to prepare the way for the true King. This passage challenges us to examine the kind of attention we draw to ourselves versus the kind we direct toward Christ. In a culture that rewards self-promotion and personal branding, John's example is countercultural in the most profound way. The spiritual lesson here is not just about humility as a virtue, but about humility as a form of worship. When we decrease, Christ increases. And that, it turns out, is the most powerful witness we can offer to the world around us.
