We often carry a picture of Jesus shaped by the gentler moments of the Gospels -- the tender invitations, the healing touch, the comforting words. But John chapter 2 confronts us with a side of Christ that shatters incomplete portraits. When Jesus enters the temple at Passover and drives out the merchants and money changers with a whip of cords, we are not witnessing a loss of composure. We are witnessing something perfectly holy -- a righteous zeal that burns against anything that corrupts true worship. The temple, meant to be a house of prayer and sacred encounter with God, had become a marketplace of exploitation. Jesus could not and would not tolerate it. This passage invites us to ask a searching question: if Christ walked into the temple of our own hearts today, what would he find there? What habits, attitudes, or misplaced priorities have quietly crowded out genuine devotion? The same Jesus who fashioned a whip and overturned tables is the one who calls us to authentic, wholehearted worship -- and he knows the difference between the real thing and a convincing imitation.
