What are we going to do with God's invitation?
In Luke 14:15–24, Jesus tells the parable of the great banquet. A man prepares a great feast and invites many people, but when the banquet is ready, those who were invited begin making excuses. The master then sends his servants into the streets, inviting the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame, and eventually opens the invitation to anyone who will come.
Pastor Straton Michelle examines the cultural context of the banquet and the meaning behind the excuses. The field, the oxen, and the marriage are not inherently bad things. The problem is allowing possessions, responsibilities, and relationships to become reasons for putting God aside. The message considers how easily we can become distracted from God while assuming we will get around to Him someday.
The parable also points to the kingdom of God and the opening of God's covenant invitation beyond Israel. What was once expected to be exclusive is now offered to everyone. We cannot earn this invitation, but we can accept or reject it.
