My first Berlin Marathon — and the first video on Ian Roman Runs.
Running the Berlin Marathon had been the goal behind months of training, hundreds of kilometers, early mornings, late-night treadmill sessions, races, personal bests, and a lot of preparation.
This video is the complete journey.
From traveling from the Philippines to Berlin, exploring the city, visiting the Berlin Marathon Expo at Tempelhof Airport, running the Generali 5K with my daughter, and finally standing inside the starting corral with thousands of runners from around the world.
Race day didn't go exactly according to plan.
I felt strong through most of the marathon, but before kilometer 35, the cramps started. From there, the goal became simple: keep moving.
Between kilometers 35 and 36, I saw my family cheering for me. It was the first time they had ever watched me run an official race since I started joining running events. At probably the hardest point of the marathon, seeing them gave me what I needed to keep going.
Then came the Brandenburg Gate.
Those final few hundred meters toward the finish line are something I will never forget.
Berlin was hard. It was supposed to be hard.
And if I ever get the opportunity to run it again, I will.
This channel will document the journey from here: training, races, marathons, travel, the mistakes, then improvements, and the experiences that running makes possible.
Run. Race. Explore.
