Six weeks before the election, Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier announced twenty people charged with voting illegally. Four years ago, the same office announced twenty arrests too. Some of those cases fell apart in court, after it came out that the state itself had sent many of the defendants voter registration cards.
This time, according to the attorney general's office, sixteen of the twenty are green card holders who registered as citizens, some of them decades ago. We follow one question: is this time different? The state makes its case in its own words, and so do the people it charged and their critics.
None of the 2026 defendants has been convicted. Each is presumed innocent.
