In slow traffic, a heavy bike usually goes over at walking pace. These are the five traffic habits we were trained to drop in Japan, and the one Japanese word that ties every fix together:
• Both boots on the floorboards, with clutch, throttle and rear brake
• Riding where you can see the driver's face in the mirror
• Stops at red lights with a gap, first gear and eyes on mirrors
• Rolling straight for six feet before the bars turn
• A two-minute talk with your passenger before the engine starts

On your next ride through stop-and-go traffic, keep both boots on the boards until you are fully stopped, and at every red light watch your mirrors instead of the light. Then write in the comments which part was harder for you, the BOOTS or the MIRRORS.
