Story Time edition: this is "The Little Zoo · Kitchen #15" - the same episode as the kids edition - read aloud slowly by a storyteller, with the characters in their own voices. A calm listen for a quiet afternoon, bedtime, or a grown-up and a child on the sofa together. The faster kids edition is on the channel too. Avery's family is in Taiwan with Kai's family, and it's their first night. It's nine o'clock at night - and breakfast time for Gus, whose tummy is still in Minnesota. Kai takes everyone to Ah-ma's favorite stall at the night market: egg cakes (in Taiwan, "ji dan gao") in the shapes of little animals - a fish, a bear, a rabbit. Avery wants to know who makes the faces. Somebody cuts them out with tiny scissors, she thinks. Or stamps them, like cookies. But the lady at the stall never smiles, and the mold is shut every time the cake is made. Gus misses Spec, and he only wants one thing: a cake that is a dog. What children find out: the batter is runny, like a milkshake. It goes into little shaped holes in a hot metal mold, and when it comes out it is a cake in the shape of the hole it was in. The hole makes it a bear. For grown-ups: a real Taiwanese night-market snack, a grandmother who holds Gus's hand and doesn't give it back, and the grown-ups doing everything hot - the bag held open until the cakes are cool enough, every child's hand held in the crowd. Avery's Toolbelt is a calm, hands-on show for ages 3-6: real tools, real cars, real kitchens, and a grown-up's hands on anything that's hot, sharp or moving.
