On August 30, 1941, an exhausted German teleprinter operator in an Athens bunker made a fatal blunder: asked to retransmit a 4,000-character message to Vienna, he reused the same 12-letter key but abbreviated the opening word "Spruchnummer" to "Spruchnr." Those five missing letters created a cryptographic "depth"—a rare glitch that stripped away the mathematical armor of the Reich’s supreme machine: the Lorenz SZ42, a 12-rotor behemoth boasting more permutations than all subatomic particles in the universe. Armed only with a pencil, an eraser, and squared paper, 24-year-old British mathematician Bill Tutte reverse-engineered the entire mechanical blueprint of the invisible machine without ever seeing it. To decode the traffic at combat speed, engineer Tommy Flowers built Colossus—the world’s first programmable electronic computer. In July 1943, Colossus decrypted Hitler’s personal orders for Operation Citadel three days before zero hour, sending 2,700 German panzers into a lethal Soviet anti-tank labyrinth at Kursk and breaking the armored spine of the Wehrmacht. -------------------------------------------------- TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 - The Lazy Typist in Athens 02:18 - Beyond Enigma: The Supreme Teleprinter Backbone 05:15 - Lorenz SZ42: The 12-Rotor Mathematical Fortress 08:20 - The Fatal Depth: Stripping the Keystream 11:15 - Bill Tutte: Mapping the Machine in Rectangles 14:10 - Tommy Flowers & Colossus: 1,500 Glowing Valves 17:05 - Operation Citadel: Decrypting the Battle of Kursk 19:45 - The Normandy Deception: Reading Hitler’s Mind 22:15 - Sledgehammers & 50 Years of Absolute Silence -------------------------------------------------- PRIMARY SOURCES & HISTORICAL REFERENCES: Tutte, W.
