Nigeria's subsidy debate, explained in plain language. Not for or against any government or candidate, just the question that comes before every subsidy argument: can we afford it?
In this episode of Pathways, Ayokunnu Ojeniyi steps into a topic he thought hard about before touching. He starts with what a subsidy actually is: a payment, which means someone has to have the money to make it. Then he walks through why petrol was sold at the pump for less than it cost, and who was quietly covering the difference.
He goes back to the numbers Nigeria was facing in 2023. According to the World Bank's June 2023 Nigeria Development Update, Nigeria was spending more than 100% of its revenue on debt service at the end of 2022, while petrol subsidy cost about N4.5 trillion, roughly 2.2% of GDP. Ayo asks what that meant for a country that could no longer borrow, and what any government, past or future, has to answer before promising to bring a subsidy back.
Then he turns to the subsidy most people have never thought about. Electricity bands, import tariffs on cars, and protection for local industry all work the same way, except in some of them it is the citizen, not the government, who pays. He also looks at how Nigeria changed its fertiliser subsidy from consumption to production, and what that shows about where subsidy money should go.
If you have ever wondered why fuel prices moved the way they did, or whether subsidy is really good or bad, this episode gives you a better question to ask.
