Do you feel dizzy, light-headed, or unsteady whenever you stand up suddenly? This can sometimes happen when your blood pressure drops after changing position. This condition is commonly known as orthostatic hypotension.
When you stand, gravity causes blood to temporarily move toward your legs. Normally, your body quickly adjusts your heart rate and blood vessels to maintain blood flow to the brain. If this adjustment does not happen properly, you may experience dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, or even fainting.
Dehydration, prolonged bed rest, certain medications, low blood pressure, anemia, and some medical conditions can contribute to these symptoms.
Simple steps such as drinking enough fluids, standing up slowly, avoiding sudden movements, and sitting or lying down immediately when you feel dizzy may help. However, frequent or severe episodes should not be ignored.
If you regularly experience dizziness on standing, fainting, chest pain, shortness of breath, confusion, or severe weakness, seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare professional can check your blood pressure in different positions and identify the underlying cause.
Listen to your body—recurrent dizziness deserves proper evaluation.
