The priciest part of Google's earliest autonomous vehicle wasn't the processor or code — it was a rotating black device known as the HDL-64E, manufactured by Velodyne, with a price tag of $75,000. This component was lidar, an acronym for light detection and ranging, which operates by emitting laser beams and calculating their bounce-back duration to generate a real-time three-dimensional environment map. For more than ten years, automotive lidar pricing shaped the whole autonomous vehicle sector: Velodyne's 64-beam model cost triple the Toyota Prius beneath it, while even more affordable 32-beam and 16-beam alternatives still commanded $30,000 and $8,000 respectively. Industry consensus held that $4,000 represented the threshold where lidar could become mainstream in regular passenger vehicles. Chinese manufacturers shattered that benchmark. Currently, a Shanghai production facility operated by Hesai Technology produces equivalent functionality for $200, cheaper than quality tire sets. Hesai surpassed 2 million total shipments, emerged as the planet's first profitable lidar manufacturer, and revealed intentions to expand output capacity to over 4 million annual units. In contrast, Luminar Technologies, the American billion-dollar enterprise partnered with Volvo that assured investors it dominated autonomous driving sensor technology, entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings in December 2024. Its semiconductor division sold for $110 million, its lidar operations transferred to another purchaser for minimal value compared to investor capital, and all equity positions were eliminated completely.
