The Dim Sim is a great Australian culinary invention that may be found in any fish 'n chip shop or roadhouse anywhere across the nation. It was inspired by Chinese dumplings but it is a unique creation invented by Chinese-Australian William Chen Wing Young in Melbourne in the 1940s. There are many versions of this snack but THE version is that which is mass produced by Marathon Foods in Kensington, Melbourne. It is cheaply made with cheap, ordinary ingredients, YET, somehow it remains the quintessential "dimmy". You can buy more expensive versions with, presumably, better ingredients but they don't capture the essence of the great Australian dimmy the way that Marathon does. The Marathon dimmy is the one we all know and it isn't going to win any culinary awards BUT if you are in the right mood, dip them in soy sauce and damn they're good!
