Elena Rybakina did not simply win the US Open. She walked into New York and took almost everything Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff were fighting for. Coco’s championship dream. Aryna’s US Open crown. Aryna’s World No. 1 ranking. And by the time Rybakina left Arthur Ashe Stadium, the entire hierarchy of women’s tennis had changed. It started with Gauff. Coco entered the US Open semifinal attempting to reclaim the championship she won in 2023. And for one set, everything appeared to be going her way. Gauff took the opener 6-3 in front of a packed American crowd. Rybakina looked vulnerable. Then the match completely changed. Rybakina became more aggressive, cleaned up her mistakes and began controlling the biggest points. She took the second set 6-4. Then she broke Gauff late in the deciding set and finished another 6-4 victory. Coco was gone. But Rybakina was not finished. Waiting in the final was Sabalenka. The two-time defending US Open champion. The woman who had spent 99 consecutive weeks at World No. 1. And the player attempting to win New York for a third consecutive year. Rybakina took that away too. She defeated Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 to capture her first US Open championship. For Sabalenka, the loss was devastating. She had already been guaranteed to lose the No. 1 ranking to Rybakina after the tournament. Now Rybakina had taken her trophy as well. And this was not the first time it happened in 2026. Back in January, Rybakina defeated Sabalenka in the Australian Open final. Now she has beaten her in both hard-court Grand Slam finals this season. Think about what that means. Rybakina started 2026 by taking the Australian Open. She finished the Grand Slam season by taking the US Open. She defeated Sabalenka for both championships. She eliminated Gauff on the way to the second. And she finished New York as the new World No. 1. Three Grand Slam championships now belong to Rybakina overall. Wimbledon. Australian Open. US Open. Only Roland Garros remains between her and the Career Grand Slam. That should terrify the rest of the WTA. Because for years the conversation centered on who would control this generation. Would Sabalenka’s overwhelming power make her the dominant force? Would Gauff become the face of the tour? Would Iga Świątek continue collecting major championships? Rybakina just delivered another answer. Do not forget about her. She does not create the loudest drama. She rarely gives opponents emotional reactions to feed off. She simply walks onto the court with one of the most dangerous serves in women’s tennis and takes matches away. Gauff experienced it in the semifinal. Sabalenka experienced it in the final. And now everybody else has to deal with the consequences. Elena Rybakina is no longer chasing the women at the top. She is the woman at the top. Sabalenka lost her crown. Coco lost her opportunity. And Rybakina left New York with the trophy, the ranking and control of the conversation. Welcome to Tennisibly — where every match tells a bigger story.
