James Brown wanted his fortune to send poor children to school. Why did his last wish become a fight that outlived him? From a shoeshine box in Augusta to the stage of the Apollo, the Godfather of Soul learned to command a room. When his label refused to fund a live album, he put up about $5,000 himself. This film follows Bobby Byrd's helping hand, the records that changed American music, and the Boston concert on the night after Dr. King's assassination. Behind the sharp suits and the relentless show were contracts, tax debts, family losses, and songs he would eventually borrow $26 million against. His seven-page will promised an education to children who needed one. What happened to that promise leads through the locked gates of his Beech Island home, his final Christmas, and the struggle over his songs and estate. Drawing on court decisions, archival newsfilm, interviews, and years of newspaper reporting, the film follows the record through fall 2025. Brown's own words and the accounts of his family and fellow musicians leave room to remember the performer, hear those who bore the costs of his success, and reach your own conclusions. 0:00 The Will Behind the Fight 6:25 The Boy on the Steps 9:30 Bobby Byrd Opens a Door 15:01 Paying for the Apollo Show 20:15 Who Owned His Voice? 25:45 Boston, April 5, 1968 31:40 The House His Lawyer Bought 37:39 The Chase Across State Lines 42:13 His Will and Last Christmas 49:09 Who Controlled the Estate? 53:37 Where Did the Money Go?
