The Commonwealth spent Day 7 on Lindsay Clancy's own body. Its own labs read out what was in her blood, and its own analyst read out whose blood was on the outside of her house.
This is Commonwealth of Massachusetts v. Lindsay Clancy, the case the country came to know as the Duxbury Mom Trial. Clancy is charged in the deaths of her three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, at their Duxbury home in January 2023. The defense does not contest the acts. It contests her mind, raising postpartum psychosis and a medication picture it says no one stopped, while the Commonwealth says she planned it. Day 7 was a half day before Judge William F. Sullivan, and every witness on it was called by the state.
It opens at the hospital, where a physician assistant describes small repairs and then watches the defense turn that same afternoon into a near death. Then the labs take over and the drugs get names. Then the DNA. Then Elaine Rossi, the family's second nanny, who says Clancy told her about her postpartum struggle months before January 2023.
WATCH WITH JUSTICE
0:00 - The physician assistant who treated Clancy at Brigham and Women's walks the jury through what he was assigned to repair. Listen to how small he makes it sound.
4:39 - Kevin Reddington's cross makes it enormous: critically ill, a massive transfusion, a spinal injury, chest tubes, and a hospital team that had to revive her.
8:47 - A former state police toxicologist tells the jury what her blood screen found. At least four or five benzodiazepines, plus substances his own lab could not measure.
12:04 - On cross he concedes he cannot say which of them came from prescriptions, and confirms there was no marijuana at all.
13:49 - Dr. Justin Brower of NMS Laboratories names the four drugs his lab measured and reads the levels out. Lamictal. Remeron. Seroquel. Only one of them runs high.
17:05 - The line the day turns on. That elevated level is not a toxic range, and Brower gives the jury the figure he would expect to see instead. "This is not consistent with that."
18:57 - "We can't do toxicology in a vacuum." He knew nothing whatsoever about this case until a few weeks before he testified.
20:26 - Could the combination stop a person breathing? Not at these levels, he says. And Narcan would have done "absolutely nothing" for her.
24:12 - Reddington walks all four drugs one at a time. Therapeutic, therapeutic, therapeutic, and Seroquel at roughly double the expected level but nothing he would call toxic.
27:44 - The judge reads the agreed DNA stipulation to the jury in his own voice, which lands differently than a witness saying it.
29:48 - "This is typical DNA gobbledygook at this point, Judge." The objection, the state's objection to the objection, and what a likelihood ratio actually is.
31:22 - The strongest DNA result of the day. A swab from the back of the house at 47 Summer Street, one contributor and no one else, 18 octillion for Lindsay Clancy.
33:47 - Elaine Rossi, the family's second nanny, testifies Clancy told her directly she was suffering from postpartum. Asked if she ever had concerns watching her with the children: "Not at all. She was a wonderful mom."
36:36 - On cross she is read back her own words to state troopers, and she confirms them. "I loved my Lindsay."
37:39 - The state's entire redirect is one question, about the one category she never mentioned. Watch the answer, and how fast she is released after it.
