Close to midnight on July 14, 1881, in Fort Sumner, New Mexico, Billy the Kid walked into a dark bedroom and asked who was there. The man in the shadows was Sheriff Pat Garrett, and two years earlier the Kid had been a guest at his wedding. He was buried the next day under a wooden marker, and today no one knows exactly where. This is the story of an orphan from New York, the governor's pardon that never came, and an old man from Texas who walked into the governor's office in 1950 and said he was Billy the Kid.
