In 1984, Volkswagen walked into China as the teacher. Four decades later, it is paying a Chinese company to teach it how to build cars.
This is the story of the greatest technology handover in automotive history. Under China's 50/50 joint-venture rule, Volkswagen, Toyota, General Motors, Honda and the rest of the West's biggest names brought their factories, their production systems and their know-how — and shared half of everything with state-owned partners like SAIC, FAW, GAC, Changan and Dongfeng.
China watched. China learned. China took notes. Then it built brands of its own: MG, IM, Aion, Hyptec, Deepal, Avatr and a reborn Hongqi — followed by BYD, Geely, Chery, Xiaomi, XPeng, NIO, Li Auto and Leapmotor. BYD now sits on the throne in China, Volkswagen has fallen to third, and China has overtaken Japan as the world's biggest car exporter.
And the teachers came back as students:
🔹 Volkswagen paid around $700 million for almost 5% of XPeng — to buy the software and electronic architecture behind the ID. UNYX 08 and its future Chinese models.
🔹 Audi launched a brand in China that does not even carry its four rings.
🔹 Toyota's bZ3X is made of almost 90% Chinese parts, according to analysts, and the bZ7 runs on a Huawei motor and Huawei software.
🔹 Mazda's 6e and CX-6e are built on Chinese foundations in Nanjing — and shipped to showrooms in Britain, Germany and Australia.
🔹 Stellantis bought into Leapmotor, and the electric MINI is built in China with Great Wall.
From China, for the world. The next European or Japanese car you buy may have a Chinese brain behind the dashboard — and most buyers will never even know it.
Was the joint-venture deal the West's biggest mistake, or the smartest deal it ever made? Tell me in the comments — I'll pin the best answer.
