We talk about the comfort zone as if it is automatically a safe place.
But familiar and healthy are not the same thing.
Sometimes your comfort zone is simply the environment your nervous system knows how to predict — even if that environment is conflict, dysfunction, fear or stagnation.
In this video I look at the different ways comfort can work against us: being over-protected, becoming afraid of risk, getting stuck in a life that no longer challenges us, and why people from dysfunctional backgrounds can sometimes find healthy relationships and environments strangely uncomfortable.
Predictable pain can feel safer than unpredictable relief.
And real comfort may have much less to do with removing risk from your life than developing the ability to handle it.
