Perun stands beneath the ancient oak as storm clouds gather above the river. In Slavic tradition, he is the god of thunder, lightning, warriors and the sacred wordб and in this Velesa episode, thunder becomes his warning. “Before the Thunder” tells the story of a warrior who swears before Perun that he will remain beside his brothers in battle. When the fighting begins, fear drives him into the forest. But the first thunderclap stops his horse at the stream and reminds him of the oath he abandoned.
