India's food inflation challenge could become more serious as a weak monsoon threatens winter crop production and pushes up the prices of essential food items.
From wheat, rice, pulses and sugar to milk, chicken and eggs, rising food prices are putting pressure on household budgets. The concern is no longer limited to vegetables or seasonal price fluctuations. Protein-rich foods and everyday essentials are also becoming more expensive.
According to a Reuters report published on November 3, 2026, India's retail food inflation reached 7.74% in September, pushing headline retail inflation to 5.54%. An economist cited in the report expects food inflation could approach 10% in the October–December quarter.
WHAT IS DRIVING INDIA'S FOOD INFLATION?
WEAK MONSOON: Below-average rainfall has reduced soil moisture and created water shortages in several farming regions, threatening winter crop sowing and yields.
GRAINS AND PULSES: Wheat, rice and pulses are facing price pressure amid concerns about tighter supplies and lower crop yields.
MILK AND CHICKEN: Rising animal-feed, fodder, transport and energy costs are adding pressure to dairy and poultry prices.
SUGAR PRICES: Sugar prices have risen significantly, while domestic production is expected to fall short of consumption for a second consecutive year.
EL NIÑO RISK: Unfavourable weather conditions could further complicate agricultural production and food supply.
THE BIG ECONOMIC QUESTIONS
Could food inflation approach 10%?
Will milk, chicken, eggs and pulses become even more expensive?
How will weak monsoon conditions affect India's farmers and rural demand?
Could higher food prices force families to cut protein consumption?
Will persistent inflation put pressure on the Reserve Bank of India to raise interest rates?
What does this mean for India's economic growth and household purchasing power?
Food inflation is not just an economic statistic. It directly affects the kitchen budget, nutrition, farmers' incomes, rural consumption and the cost of living.
