Edmond Roudnitska (1905 to 1996) is widely considered the most important perfumer of the twentieth century, but his impact and his family's impact on modern perfumery is under-discussed in mainstream fragrance commentary. In this episode, Tracey explores Roudnitska's composing career from his 1944 Rochas commission Femme through his 1972 Dior masterpiece Diorella, with detailed discussion of his Dior commissions Diorama (1949) and Diorissimo (1956), his Hermès commission Eau d'Hermès (1951), and his architectural pivot Eau Sauvage (1966), which introduced the Firmenich synthetic Hedione (methyl dihydrojasmonate, a synthetic jasmonate) at an unprecedented concentration and reorganised what modern perfumery was allowed to be.
The episode also profiles Thérèse Delveaux Roudnitska, Edmond's wife from 1942 and principal evaluator at his Cabris studio Art et Parfum, who is identified here as the co-author of Diorissimo and as an under-credited collaborator on the broader catalogue from 1947 onward. The Pierre Bourdon lineage is traced through Bourdon's apprenticeship at Art et Parfum starting around 1970 to his 1988 Davidoff bottle Cool Water and his 2000 Frédéric Malle bottle Iris Poudre. The episode introduces Michel Roudnitska (born 1948), Edmond and Thérèse's son, who took over Art et Parfum at Edmond's 1996 death and composed the Roudnitska-school bottles in the Parfums DelRae catalogue out of San Francisco (Amoureuse, Bois de Paradis, and Eau Illuminée in 2002; Emotionnelle in 2006, which carries a Roudnitska-tribute melon note that echoes Le Parfum de Thérèse and Diorama). The downstream aesthetic inheritors of the Roudnitska school, including Jean-Claude Ellena, Olivia Giacobetti, and Christine Nagel, are named as the principal twenty-first-century carriers of the transparent-minimalist register.
Three of Roudnitska's central aesthetic theses from his 1980 book Le Parfum are discussed: the construction thesis, the architecture of reduction, and the defense of synthetics.
