There are seven bottles on the tray. Four are KAYALI. Two are Amouage. One is Maya Njie. None of them sit in the Western fragrance canon. The canon was built on capital and marketing. The traditions these seven bottles come from are older, in some cases by the better part of a millennium. They have been quoted by the canon for decades without ever being named. The episode begins eight months ago on a Sephora website. An Uber driver politely asks me to roll down my window after I have tried fragrance layering for the first time. The result is atomic. The lesson is structural. KAYALI's own brand page contains the entire cultural argument in a single sentence about the Middle Eastern ritual of layering. The sentence is in italics. The canon had not been quoting it under its actual name. The canon never had to. This DryDown covers four KAYALI bottles doing four variations of one project. Maya Njie's Tobak, which has been getting an extremely good review for years from an audience the Western press has been pointedly not reading. Two Amouage bottles from inside an Omani perfumery house founded in 1983, including a fragrance called Imitation Woman that took a slur the Western press had been deploying for two centuries and put it on the box in italics. Wearing notes throughout. Fleur Majesty is a loud jammy rose with a praline you can feel on your teeth. Interlude Man opens like Little Italy meets a gothic cathedral and gets louder the longer you wear it. Vanilla 28 is the bottle for the days you cannot be trusted to dress yourself. Imitation Woman smells like a Bergdorf's counter assistant in 1962. Three houses. Three inheritances. No letter to Paris. The French canon's monopoly has ended. The building has neighbours.
