Thinking about getting a Chow Chow? Before you fall completely in love with that beautiful face, there's one question worth asking: Are you choosing the dog you want — or are you prepared to live with the dog you actually get? In Episode 1 of Before You Choose a Chow Chow, we look honestly at the pros and cons of living with this remarkable breed — independence, loyalty, calmness, temperament, training, grooming, shedding, socialisation, health and the responsibilities that come with owning a Chow Chow. Because the same characteristic that makes a Chow Chow wonderful for one person can make life surprisingly difficult for another. A Chow Chow may be independent rather than eager to please. Calm does not mean every individual is low-energy. Loyalty does not mean wanting to greet strangers. And that magnificent coat comes with maintenance — even the Smooth Chow Chow still sheds. We also look at something that can be overlooked when choosing a puppy: the individual dog. Why “the puppy will choose you” isn't necessarily the best way to choose. Why an experienced breeder should consider your home, lifestyle and the developing temperament of the puppies. And why an adult Chow Chow or rescue can sometimes be the right choice — while also requiring an honest assessment of what that individual dog may need. Most importantly, this episode asks a bigger question: Can you responsibly care for this dog when things don't go according to plan? This isn't a video designed to persuade you to choose a Chow Chow. It's designed to help you decide whether the real Chow Chow is right for your real life. Because the question isn't simply: “Do I want a Chow Chow?” It's: “Do I want to live with a Chow Chow exactly as he is?” In this episode Chow Chow pros and cons Chow Chow independence and strong personality Chow Chow temperament and individual differences Why some people find Chow Chows stubborn or difficult to train The difference between obedience, willingness to please and intelligence Choosing a Chow Chow puppy based on temperament rather than appearance Why the “right puppy will choose you” isn't necessarily true Working with an experienced Chow Chow breeder Rough and Smooth Chow Chow grooming and shedding Chow Chow loyalty and socialisation Setting boundaries with strangers in public Considering an adult Chow Chow Considering Chow Chow rescue Why a rescue environment can affect how a Chow Chow behaves Health concerns and the financial responsibility of ownership Working with the individual dog rather than trying to change its nature Why Chow Chows need leadership, not simply commands How to decide whether a Chow Chow fits your lifestyle Before You Choose a Chow Chow This series is for anyone considering bringing a Chow Chow into their life. Rather than simply listing breed characteristics, Before You Choose a Chow Chow looks at what those characteristics actually mean when you live with the dog. Some will discover that a Chow Chow is exactly the dog they've been looking for. Others may realise that another breed — or an adult dog or rescue — is a better fit. Both are good outcomes. The goal is an informed choice, not a sale.
