A Japanese company's drones were built in Kyiv, delivered in Ukraine, and never left the country. A week later, Russia promised Tokyo a response that "will be felt." This is the story of why Moscow is threatening a country whose support for Ukraine has been almost entirely financial and humanitarian.
The delivery is not the whole reason. Russia has been warning Tokyo since April, when Japan lifted its postwar ban on exporting weapons. Behind the threat sit the Kuril Islands, a Russian gas project that supplies Japan, the risk around Taiwan, and a drone industry that depends on parts Japan does not make.
What you'll see:
How a delivery of interceptor drones built in Kyiv set off a diplomatic crisis
What Russia's foreign ministry said, and what Tokyo answered
How Japan's export rules changed in April, and what that opened up for Japanese producers
The two interceptors and the third, smaller drone, with their price, range and payload as the maker states them
What the units that fly them say about results so far, and what they do not claim
The arithmetic of cheap interceptors against expensive missiles
The Kuril Islands, the Russian military drills nearby, and why Tokyo treats them as more than scenery
A Japanese reporter arrested on Sakhalin, and the Chinese delegation in the same week
The gas Japan still buys from Russia, and Washington's request to stop
Why Taiwan, 110 km from Japan's westernmost island, changes the whole calculation
The line that decides everything: about twenty parts in the drone, and the two its maker can produce
