Pick up that pack of chicken and flip it over. There may be a tiny line most people never read: “contains up to 15% solution” or “up to 6% retained water.” That means part of the weight you paid chicken prices for is saltwater — injected in before you bought it. And it's completely legal. That's just one trick. We count down 5: “natural” (true of nearly all raw chicken), “vegetarian fed” (marketing), “free range / raised without antibiotics” (loosely defined), “no hormones added” (the famous meaningless one — hormones are already illegal in ALL US poultry, and the USDA even makes them print a disclaimer saying so), and #1 — “enhanced” chicken injected with saltwater and sold to you by the pound. To be fair: none of this is illegal or dangerous. Enhanced chicken is safe and disclosed; “no hormones” is 100% true — just worthless as a difference. The trick is true statements arranged to make you pay more. Attribution: USDA / FSIS / FDA. The one label that actually means something is USDA Organic (regulated + monitored). Then the 4-second test: (1) read the % solution / retained-water line, (2) check sodium, (3) ignore “no hormones,” (4) look for USDA Organic. Subscribe and shop with more confidence — because the label doesn't always tell the full story. Educational, based on public USDA/FSIS/FDA information.
