Limo tint, straight pipes, LED conversion kits, smoked tail lights, giant lift kits, slammed cars, home-made bull bars, cat deletes and re-chipped turbos: 25 cars and modifications you see on New Zealand roads, the rule behind each one, and why 2027 changes what you stand to lose. Most of them are already against the rules today. A few, like radar detectors, are legal in NZ.
On 9 January 2027 the Antisocial Road Use Legislation Amendment Act comes into force. For street racing, burnouts, fleeing police, intimidating convoys and owners who won't say who was driving, the court must order the car forfeited to the Crown, or forfeited and destroyed, on the first conviction. Plus the other 2027 dates: demerit points extending restricted licences from 25 January, the end of the rego label on 1 March, and two-yearly WoFs for 2013-2019 cars from 1 November.
We also cover NZ's own 20-year import rule, wound-back odometers, left-hand-drive cars, Takata airbags, written-off cars on the NZTA damaged vehicles list, and the story of "Crusher Collins" and how few cars the 2009 law actually crushed.
Which one surprised you most: the legal ones, or the cars heading for the crusher? Tell us in the comments, and check the rules before you build or buy.
⚠️ Rules, fines and dates were checked in October 2026 and can change. The new law only applies to offences committed on or after 9 January 2027. Always check the current rules and get your modifications certified before you drive.
