Pastor Anthony Burrell continues our Engaging the Critics response series, and in this episode he turns to Mike Colburn’s second episode of his Engaging Adventism series. Mike’s second episode focuses heavily on three key Pauline passages often used in discussions about the Sabbath: *Colossians 2:16–17, Romans 14:5–6, and Galatians 4:8–11*. Using what he calls a process of “triangulation,” Mike argues that these passages, when taken together, show that Paul did not require Gentile Christians to keep the seventh-day Sabbath and that the believer’s true rest is ultimately found in Christ. A major portion of Mike’s argument centers on *Colossians 2:16*, where he challenges the Adventist interpretation of the word “sabbaths” and appeals to the work of prominent Adventist scholar Samuele Bacchiocchi. He argues that attempts to exclude the weekly Sabbath from the passage face serious linguistic difficulties. Mike then moves to *Romans 14*, where he interprets Paul’s discussion of esteeming one day above another as evidence that sacred-day observance had become a matter of individual conscience rather than a universally binding obligation. Finally, he appeals to *Galatians 4:8–11*, arguing that Paul’s warning about observing “days, months, times, and years” further undermines the idea that Christians remain obligated to keep the seventh-day Sabbath. But do these passages actually teach what Mike claims? In this response, Pastor Anthony Burrell carefully examines Mike’s arguments, his use of context, his appeal to scholarship, and the assumptions behind his interpretation of these passages. We will look closely at whether Colossians 2 really makes the seventh-day Sabbath “linguistically impossible,” whether Romans 14 is actually discussing the Sabbath, and whether Galatians 4 can legitimately be used to overturn the Sabbath commandment.
